Joel Chadabe composed Solo in 1978. The hardware was a custom Synclavier. The software 'improvised' a melody in eight voices, played by electronic sounds reminiscent of vibraphone, clarinet, and flute. In performance, Chadabe 'conducted' this improvising ensemble by moving his arms relative to two antennas, in fact modified theremins built for him by Robert Moog. It was an early example of what Chadabe called 'interactive composing', a term he coined to describe a performance situation in which a performer and computer share control of a musical process.
