The Israel Center for Electronic Music, the first electronic music studio in Israel, was founded in 1961 at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem by composer Joseph Tal. A student of Paul Hindemith in Berlin in his youth, and consequently schooled in European style, Tal sought to create a new Israeli music, distinct from European models. Upon Tal's retirement in 1980, Menachem Zur became director of the studio.
