 Mikrophonie

  Microphonie

Mikrophonie, composed by Karlheinz Stockhausen in 1964, is among the first electronic performance works.

Two performers 'excite' the tam-tam using various household objects. Two additional players, holding microphones, pick up the sounds while moving the microphones in varying rhythms to various distances from the tam-tam and from the exact point of excitation, thereby effecting the dynamics, timbre and spatial perception of the sounds. As Stockhausen put it, they are using microphones "the way a doctor examines a patient with a stethoscope".
